The trip report

DAY 1: Sunny weather! We had a few members initially signed up and for various reasons, dropped out one member was a NO SHOW. That said, we were happy to enjoy the company of Jonny for one night. We left our house in Waterville Valley, NH around 10AM and arrived in Freeport around 1PM. Of course, we had to first stop at LL Bean, Patagonia and North Face.

Arriving at 3:30pm, our ‘ocean’ site had limited views of the ocean [trees blocking the view]. We expected to hear the sounds of the ocean and surf crashing…NOT! We purchased a king size, deluxe air mattress right before this trip…hey, we are car camping after all…and thought Jon’s air pump would inflate it…NOT!!! It did inflate it a bit so we were somewhat comfortable sleeping on it. But wait! Something else broke down. The front door zipper of our tent tore so we left the door open all night. I think we are better at backpacking than car camping…LOL!

Jon made a delicious dinner. We took a stroll to the other end of the campground and found a small path that led to the ocean with a stone bench to sit on. Jonny joined us for our campfire soiree and we all had a good time catching up, laughing and sharing stories.

DAY 2: Clear skies, sunny with comfortable temperatures in the 60’s! Jonny packed up in the morning and drove up further north for some hiking adventures. We decided to drive up to Boothbay and visit the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. It was amazing and is most beautiful botanical garden we have ever seen! The native butterfly garden was a singular experience – a garden of nectar plants for butterflies interplanted with host plants for caterpillars.

Hidden throughout, we found the five giant trolls: Soren, Lilja, Gro, Roskva and Birk. Lots of fun looking for them. They were absolutely magical! Walking through the Fairy House Village was spooky with structures built by spirits. Besides the gardens, there were beautiful sections of woodlands by the ocean to walk. What a walk through a stunning array of gorgeous floral and natural scenery! The various gardens wowed us, with so many types of plants and gardens.

This was by far our favorite thing to do on our camping trip! We spent more time here than expected…four hours and well worth the drive from Freeport. I would recommend this to anyone. Back at our campsite, we looked at our deflated air mattress. Even though it was quite a big mattress, we decided to inflate the old-fashioned way. Our own air. And guess what. It worked! Yippee!

We ate these delicious grilled Sirloin steaks, walked to the same spot as yesterday by the ocean but this time saw a nice sunset and sat beside a warm campfire to finish the day!

DAY 3: The day was cloudy with possibly rain later in the evening. Mindful that our tent door could not close it was best we pack up. Our plan was to drive down the coast and then drive back west to our home. Our first stop was Portland’s Old Port City. We walked down Commercial Street looking at the trendy storefronts, checked out the cobblestone streets, smelled the salty air strolling down the piers and finished with eating delicious ‘Holy Donut’ donuts with hot coffee. Our next stop was Clambake at Pine Point [near Old Orchard Beach] eating a mound of food in their fisherman’s platter. We then took a couple of ocean strolls at Pine Point and Ocean Park beaches.

For information on the campsites and making reservations click here:  https://www.freeportcamping.com/. Nightly rates vary depending if you want ocean view versus inland: $70 to $39.

Jon and I will be camping Thursday night thru Saturday nights with a Sunday departure. You are most welcome to join us to make this a 3-night excursion or choose the days that work best for you and let us know. We are staying at campsite 826 if you would like to camp near us. Please post a comment as to which campsite you reserved and for which nights.

When you arrive, make sure you stop by our site to say hello.

The campground offers two-hour kayak rentals and either half or full day bike rentals which we plan to do. We also plan to visit nearby Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park for some great coastal hiking. There is always shopping and dining in Freeport itself.  If the weather if warm, we could also hang out at one of the nearby beaches: Reid State Beach or Popham Beach State Park!

Each campsite has a fire pit, a picnic table, room for your equipment, and a parking space for one car. There are free hot showers. Bathrooms - flushing toilets and outhouses.

We are thinking we can take turns hosting a potluck BBQ and fire each night. Jon and I will host Saturday night. We can also think about going into Freeport for dinner one night. Lots of options!

Has anyone other than M&J reserved a campsite? I just looked at the available sites. I believe we can share a site and split the cost if they are large enough for 2 tents.

I have not reserved a space. I was looking the other day, seemed like no places were close to their campsite. I have a 10 person tent, large enough for 2 queen size mattresses. But that would leave little room inside, perhaps you have a smaller air mattress than mine? Alternatively, we could set up another tent, just to put some things in. So level ground is Not so necessary.

Hi, I would like to share a tent. I have a single camp cot which does not take up much space.

We are so excited to welcome you to our camping weekend! Is there anything in particular you guys want to do? Right now, we are leaning towards doing a two hour kayak rental on Thursday at 1:30pm [campground check-in begins at noon], half day bike rental for Friday and coastal hiking on Saturday. Jon and I are hosting the BBQ/Potluck Saturday night. Anyone volunteering for hosting Thursday or Friday nights?

I was just able to book site 827. I am driving myself and will be using a 7-person tent. I am happy to share my site if someone is interested. I am also willing to help with hosting on Thursday or Friday night, I am just not sure what that entails. Can someone get me up to speed on what that means and what needs to be done? I look forward to meeting everyone, this will be my first trip with this group.

I discussed this further with my partner and having everyone take a turn hosting a potluck might be hard to pull off with all the logistics involved. If everyone is fine with this, we can all cook our own dinner at our site but then gather together for a communal campfire afterwards. We can host a campfire for everyone at our site on Thursday as folks arrive. Don, would you mind hosting a communal campfire at your site Friday night at 7PM. Anyone want to pick up Saturday night at 7PM?
Don59 · Sep 8, 2023
I am still getting to know this site. Gandalf, I replied to your e-mail but noticed that it did not post on the site. Thanks for the information about the to potluck. I am happy to host a campfire at my site on Friday night. Thanks, I look forward to meeting everyone.

I noticed that there a couple of people that would like to share a campsite. I am happy to do that if someone wants to reach out to me and let me know.
