Privacy Policy
GayOutdoors does not send spam or sell or rent email addresses. Here's how we handle your information.
About the Information We Collect
GayOutdoors is a social network that connects you to people through networks of your friends. You create a profile, which is then linked to your friends to create your network. To do this, we display certain information to people within the network, such as your first name, age range, and any optional information you provide about yourself. Your email address isn't shown on your profile, on events or in trip reports. Other people get it only when you use the site to write to them: when you email a member, your buddies or the people on an event, or send an event to a friend, we send it from GayOutdoors with your email address attached, so they can reply straight to you, and if they reply, you'll see their address. Messages to the Board or through Contact Us reach our volunteers with your address so they can answer, and a directory listing shows any contact email you put on it. When you write to someone through the site, we keep a record of which form you used, when and how many people it went to; the record doesn't say who they were or what you wrote. We use it to limit how many emails a member can send in an hour and to see how much each form is used, and delete it after a year. Volunteers who coordinate a chapter or founded a club have their contact address listed on those pages. Other members and visitors never see your date of birth or exact age; only you and site staff can.
Information Collected by GayOutdoors
GayOutdoors asks for certain information such as your name, email address, gender, and date of birth.
Information Obtained from Your Computer
GayOutdoors also collects the type and version number of your browser as well as your computer's IP address. We use this for general administration of the website only.
Sharing of Your Information
We do not sell, rent, share, trade, or give away any of your personal information, except as described above when you write to someone through the site, or when required by law.
How We Use Your Information
We use your information principally to enhance your experience using the website. Links available on the home page and elsewhere may be shown because they have relevance to you.
It is also used in aggregated form (i.e., as statistics like “12% of members are under the age of 20”), and in that form may be widely distributed. However, we never release your personal information.
Use of Cookies
We use cookies to store information such as your email address and password on your computer so that you can log in automatically. You activate this feature when you join or log in by asking the computer to remember your member name and password. To prevent someone from logging in as you, you should use this option ONLY on a computer where you will be the only person with access.
Security
Your membership information is protected by a password. This prevents unauthorized access to your membership information. If you feel your password has been compromised, change the password in your profile.
Email from GayOutdoors
We send an e-newsletter, Trail Mail, that you decide to receive by filling out the form on our website. We will send you new event notifications/reminders and event ideas via email for any posted within 150 miles of the zip code you entered. You can expand this notification, or choose to receive no email notification at all, by editing your profile information. Other members can also email you through the site: any Sustaining Member (unless your profile is set to “Nobody”), your buddies, the hosts and other people on events you join, and the volunteers who approve events. Those emails come from GayOutdoors with the sender’s email address attached, so you can reply directly. If you host an event, we also email you when someone signs up, cancels, posts in its discussion or writes its trip report.
We never send attachments with any email. If you get an attachment or an email purporting to originate from GayOutdoors, do not open it — it is likely to be a virus!
