About this event

Boston Freedom Trail: The approximate distance of the historic trail (starting at Boston Common and ending at the USS Constitution) is roughly 2.5 miles, one way. Not factoring short cuts, detours, distractions and the return walk back to the common. Participants are welcome to break off from the group at any time if the need arises.

This trip is considered easy to moderate. Several bail out opportunities are available and alternative transportation is accessible if anyone is in need.

Group will meet at 8:45 am and depart up the trail at 9am SHARP.

Group will gather at the Edward Everett Hale Monument, located at the Charles Street entrance to the Boston Common. The entrance is opposite the Public Parking Garage. Highly recommended to arrive early, flowers should be in bloom in the park.

Our adventure will follow the Freedom Trail through the streets of Boston stopping at various historical sites along the ways. At times other curious stops may be included. Further details as to specific sites will be posted the week prior along with admission fees if applicable. For more research visit the Freedom Trail Web site.

Some historical sites do require an admission fee. There are three options for participants.

  1. Do not pay and wait outside while others tour.
  2. Pay as you go and pay at the sites of interest. (Hike leaders Preference) $
  3. Purchase an online pass that covers more than the sites toured on this hike. $$

PREPARATION/WHAT TO BRING: Most important is comfortable walking shoes. Small bag for water and snacks. This is a rain or shine activity so watch the weather for details.

For this trip it is important to bring along flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor.

Group Size: It is not fun leaving folks out of trips. If you cannot attend, PLEASE cancel so others may join. If you are on the waiting list, please contact me days prior to the trip, most likely there is room on this trip.

Dogs ARE NOT RECOMMENDED, please leave all pets at home.

Weather: Watch your local news for updates

After trip social: Intention is to return to the common by 2pm. For those wishing to attend, we will go to Fire and Ice, 205 Berkeley Street. Cost is Approx. 20/person all you can eat. Drinks not included. WIDE selection of food options prepared right in front of you.

IMPORTANT – Admission fees, subway (if needed) and meals are the responsibility of each participant. The leader is NOT collecting any money for any purpose at any time.

Because of trip preparation the trip leader is unable to provide a ride for this trip.

Any questions please email the hike leader.

Very excited for our city adventure. Heads up, good or bad, Patriots Day is Monday April 18th. There will be an increase in activities at the historic sites through out the city. Awesome! However, streets, subway and parking may be altered on Saturday for the setting up the Boston Marathon. Please plan accordingly. Nothing will change (as of now) for our scheduled plans. More updates on sites etc to follow this week. Thank you JT

Weather is looking good. I am a back country person so preparing to this urban adventure is new. I highly recommend comfortable shoes! Lots of walking! Although there are stores along the route I suggest packing water and snacks. Research shows vague and diverse COVID rules so plan on having a mask handy as some locations may require it inside and out. Email directly if you have questions.

Research regarding Admission Fees. Some sites require a fee. There are 16 total "official sites", the following require a fee, Kings Chapel ($1); Park Street Church (donations); Old State House and Old South Meeting House (combined ticket $15); Old North Church ($6) -- I personally will pay as I go and determine entrance on crowds or wait time. Folks are welcome to do as they wish, the group will factor some wait time before moving to the next site.

Looking for a place to stash a small suitcase during the hike. Maybe in your car in the parking garage?
