The trip report

Written by tdefauw

Thanks to Dave, Wayne, Steve, Jay, Fred, and Max for joining us for a great hike today, and for going with the flow for a last minute change in the hike. We originally planned to do a loop to Mount Livermore via the Brooks Fisher Trail, but I found out late the night before that the Squam Lakes Association had closed the trails for mud season. So by Saturday morning we had communicated that the hike was going to be the Coppermine Trail to Bridal Veil Falls in Franconia, and everyone still came on the new hike! As far as weather, we couldn't have asked for anything better. It was a high in the 50s, sunny, and no wind. There was ice and then packed snow on the trail, but microspikes worked great and we never had any post holing. On the way up, we stopped by the plaque put up by Bette Davis in honor of one of her husbands, Arthur Farnsworth "the Keeper of Stray Ladies". When we got to the waterfall, we were able to climb up the waterfall (due to the snow and ice, otherwise it would all have been wet slippery rock) to see magnificent ice formations. All in all, it was a great day to do a great hike with great people and great conversation!

About this event

Unfortunately the planned hike for today, Mt Livermore Loop via Brooks Fisher Trail, has been canceled because the trail has been closed by the Squam Lake Association due to mud season.    So this is an alternate hike.

The hike to Bridal Veil Falls via the Coppermine Trail is a beautiful and gentle 2.5 miles each way along a stream to Bridal Veil Falls.  The falls is beautiful in winter with the ice, but the falls could also be raging today due to the recent warm temperatures.    There is also a plaque put up by Bette Davis in honor of one of her husbands.

We will meet at the trailhead at 11.  In case anyone hasn't received the communication, we will also meet at 10 at Holderness Central School and drive over.   Please let me know where you're going to meet us.  If everyone is meeting us at the trailhead, then we won't go over to Holderness Central School first.   Also, if you need to cancel, that's completely understandable, but please let me know if possible.

Email went to my spam folder, not sure if this happened to anyone else but the hike is cancelled. There may be an alternate hike on offer tomorrow......Max

Thanks Max. Sorry didn't realize that the communication was going to people's spam.

The trail we were going to do is closed for mud season. My thought is to still meet at Holderness Central School at 10 and go do an alternate hike. I'll post back by 7 or 7:30 with an update on what hike.

Two possibilities are 3-3.5 miles each way on carriage roads at Castle in Clouds to Turtleback Mountain or Bald Knob, or the Coppermine Trail to Bridal Veil Falls in Franconia.

Hi guys, the new hike today is Coppermine Trail to Bridal Veil Falls in Franconia (2.5 miles each way, 1000 feet elevation).

You can still meet us at Holderness Central School at 10 and then we'll drive over (about 45 minutes).

Or you can meet us at the trailhead at 11 am. Google map "Coppermine Trail, Coppermine Rd, Franconia, NH".

If possible respond and let me know where to expect each of you. Of course, if you need to cancel, that's perfectly understandable.
