About this event
This event is organized as part of the GO Camping weekend at Vitambi. If you are not camping, and want to join us for the day, please let me know, and I will send you directions on where to meet. This is a three and a half hour tour of a sugar cane operation organized by the Clewiston (FL) Chamber of Commerce. The charge is $38 per person. We have to meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce office to board their bus. The first part of the tour involves visiting an actual sugar cane farm. We will walk the fields, and be given the opportunity of cutting some cane to chew on the juicy stalk. Afterwards, they will take us to the sugar mill to watch the operation. However, depending on the level of activity, we may not be able to enter the mill itself, and will simply do either a walking tour outside, or be driven around in the bus. January is usually one of the busiest times because it is optimal harvest time, so it is quite likely that we won't be able to go inside. The tour also includes a narrated history of Clewiston and the sugar industry around Lake Okeechobee. Bring a hat and sunscreen for when walking outside, as the Florida sun can be brutal. We should be done by 1:00 p.m. Reservations are a must for this tour, so please sign up if you want to do this, as I will need a head count at least three to four days before the event, in order to make the appropriate reservations. Rain will cancel the event.
