Benton MacKaye Trail Hike - Towee Creek to Coker Creek.
Lovely Hike - But a little more difficult than expected.
The trip report
Written by dnaturist
Four of us did this hike which started off with about three miles of steady downpour. Rather than getting clothes soaked to the bone, we chose to do this hike au natural.
The hike had many more steady ups than I thought it would which also slowed up down as much as the rain. With the elevated views we got to see many of the waterways near the trail. For a good bit of the hike we traveled along side, but well above, several large creeks.
As we neared the end of the hike, we encountered one of those "full" creeks right in front of us. Which then caused us to pause and look for other ways across. But, to no avail. The experienced "river crosser" tried it first to find the best way across. A successful crossing was made with only one hiker slipping in for a full plunge.
At the end of the hike a cooling off skinny dip took place near our destination trailhead. A wet but good day.

About this event
This 5.8 mile hike will provide sweeping views of the Hiwassee River and the surrounding mountains..A beautiful view can be seen from the swinging bridge which crosses the Hiwassee River at the Apalachia Powerhouse. Anothe notable feature on this hike is the Narrows, a deep narrow gorge. At the confluence of Coker Creek and the Hiwassee River are an array of large, beautifully shaped boulders.
A side trip 3 miles up Coker Creek Trail will lead to beautiful cascades and waterfalls.
This will be a one-way hike and will require an auto shuttle. Plan to spend 4 to 6 hours on this hike (depending on the side trip).
