About this event

Join me for a relatively easy bushwhack to the summit of Mount Whitewall (3405') with its dramatic cliffs, which make up the eastern wall of Zealand Notch.  This mountain is not climbed often, since there is no trail; however, for its size and effort it provides some of the best views of the Pemigewasset Wilderness.  We'll bushwhack off of the A-Z trail in order to reach this modest peak.  The summit of this rather flat mountain is marked by a canister and is also a geocache site.  Near the summit are expansive, open ledges which provide amazing, panoramic views over the wilderness...notably Zealand, Hale, the Bonds, Carrigain and the Hancocks.  We'll bushwhack southeasterly off of the summit through mostly open woods and link up with the Ethan Pond Trail.  We'll continue by following the Ethan Brook to the spectacular Thoreau Falls with its 80-foot drop and ledge views of the wilderness from the top.  Finally, we will return through the dramatic Zealand Notch.

Total Distance and Elevation Gain:  11 miles with approximately 1600 feet in cumulative elevation gain.

Total Time:  About 7 hours depending on breaks and group's speed.

Rain or harsh weather may postpone to another date or cancel, as appropriate.

What to Bring:  Typical summer hiking gear should be appropriate:  convertible hiking pants/shorts, good sturdy hiking boots with good traction and thick socks, a windbreaker/raingear.  Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water (at least 2-L).  Optionally, pack sunscreen, bug spray and anything else that you may require for a day hike.

Carpooling:  Contact other participants or the trip leader to arrange for a rideshare to the trailhead.

Afterwards:  If there is sufficient interest, we will have drinks and/or dinner in Lincoln or North Woodstock.
