The trip report
A diverse group of 35 hikers joined us for this event, hikers ranging in age from the 30's up to the 70's. It was a picture-perfect day for hike and swim. There was a great photo opportuny at the bluffs, and then 20 hikers took a dip in Long Island Sound. After the hike, 25 participants joined us for the after-hike social at a great local Groton restaurant 8 minute drive away on Route 12.

About this event
Bluff Point is the last remaining significant piece of undeveloped land (over 800 acres) along the Connecticut coastline. Over 100 summer cottages wiped out in the Hurricane of 1938 were never rebuilt. It is one of few public parks in Connecticut where one can combine a day hike with a swim in Long Island Sound.
From parking lot we will hike a clockwise elliptical route, past the ruins of the Governor Winthrop homestead (1st Governor of Connecticut), to the Bluffs (approximately 1 hour), where there are ample photo opportunities at the rocky seascape. From there it is a 10 minute walk to a strip of beach, where we will spend about 1 hour dipping in the Sound (bring suit and towel if you wish to participate). We will then continue our clockwise elliptical route back to parking lot (less than 1 hour). Hikers will be invited to meet at local Groton restaurant for after-hike social. NOTE: Dogs are allowed on the trail, but not on the strip of beach.
