About this event
This outing is part of the Second Florida GO Gathering at Vitambi Springs Campground. We have received permission from the Florida Everglades Audubon Society chapter to visit STA-5, a restored wetland that was historically a part of the Everglades. STA stands for Stormwater Treatment Area, and several of these have been established in what was once part of the slow moving River of Grass as the Everglades are also known. Historically, water from Lake Okeechobee overflowed its southern banks and moved slowly all over South Florida on its way to the sea. The resulting wetlands were a subtropical Eden that was mostly destroyed by farming and urbanization. The STA's were created from farmland that was purchased or donated to the state, with the express purpose of holding stormwaters for restoration of wetlands. These are now thriving and are full of wildlife. At this time of the year flocks of migratory birds will be present, augmenting the resident population tenfold.
These sites are closed to the public, but the Everglades Chapter of the Audubon Society is allowed certain time slots for visits. We are fortunate to have been approved for one these slots, and hope to enjoy a great morning of birdwatching. This is not a walking tour, as the Audubon Society requests that visitors stay in their cars, in order to minimize impact to the birds. There will be some spots where we will be able to get out of the cars and walk to observation decks, so bring your binoculars. Also bring water, as there is no potable water in the STA, and yes, bring bug repellent. This is Florida, and they will be there. The Audubon Society requests that we do not bring our canine friends to this event, as they tend to scare the birds.
