Who's up for a Mt. Wilson Hiking Trip? This is a full day, 14-mile round-trip hike, starting at Chantry Flats, above Arcadia. This is a strenuous, 8 to 10 hour hike. The only water sources are at Chantry Flats Pack Station and at the Mt. Wilson Observatory, at the top of the mountain. The climb is over 3,900 feet.
Preparation
Footwear
Bring well broken-in boots with good ankle support and good traction. Some of the most common injuries hikers suffer are blisters and ankle injuries; good footwear is the best way to prevent these problems.
Trash
There is no trash service on trails. Besure to pack out all trash. When possible, you can help park rangers by picking up trash that you encounter on the trail. Bearproof trash cans are available at trailheads.
Water
One of the easiest ways to ensure a safe, enjoyable hike is to be sure to have plenty of water. Weather conditions and personal preference affect the amount of water you need, but suggested minimum amounts per person are:
2 quarts (2 liters) hiking to the top. Water is available at the Observatory.
River water is available, however you should treat this water using a giardia-rated water filter. Drinking untreated river water may cause significant illness.
Restrooms
Flush toilets are available at the Chantry Flats Pack Station and at the top of the mountain at the Observatory. At any other location, you are required to bury any solid human waste at least six inches (15 cm) deep and at least 100 feet (30 m) from water or trails. Pack out toilet paper.
Food:
Available at the Observatory but we suggest you bring your own.
Parking:
A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parkiing. (REI sells them)
Meet at the Chantry Flats Pack Station, on the deck, next to the store. We are starting the hike at 7:30am.
