Hiking Raven Rocks/Appalachian Trail
Great day for a hike
The trip report
The weather was overcast and clouds hung low, but it didn't rain and the temperature was perfect. This is one of my favorite hikes because it's relatively short, easy to get to, and gives you a decent workout in the beautiful outdoors. As a bonus, there was virtually no one else on the trail.

About this event
Raven Rocks is an out crop of rocks with a splendid view, one of the best in the area. It is located along the Appalachian Trail less that .5 miles north of Raven Rock Hollow Rd. The hike begins in Virginia, and we will cross the state line on foot into West Virginia as we follow the Appalachian Trail to reach Raven Rocks. Although the distance is only 5.5 miles with a vertical gain of 1,530ft, there are three strenuous ascents on this out and back hike. Raven Rocks is also a popular area with rock climbers, as it can be accessed by a road 0.4 miles from the east. There is a good chance we will see wildlife as this area tends to be rather secluded.
Make sure to wear sturdy footwear, as the hike remains entirely on the white blazed Appalachian Trail, is very rocky, and moderately steep. It is wide and travels through very open woods. There are large boulders off the trail in areas.
The drive out there takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes and the hike will take around 3 hours. Bring water and any food/snacks you may want.
