About this event

'Returning To Our Native Roots'

That is the theme of this camping Jamboree.

We will spend a wonderful weekend nestled in the Upper Santa Ynes Valley in Los Padres National forest at Upper Oso campground near Santa Barbara.  Said to be one of the most scenic and natural areas in the State, this area is steeped in history and folklore. At our Saturday evening campfire we will have a Native American storyteller be with us to share the history and lives of the original peoples who lived here, the Chumash. We will step back in time to hear and experience the world the way the native peoples saw it. Also, be prepared as our campsite itself is a destination, with jaw dropping views of Little Pine Mountain from an enchanted canyon setting amidst towering oaks.  Hikes with astounding vistas await you with great swimming holes and relaxing pools. Night hikes, deep-sky telescopic observing where you will learn the mythology of the heavens above. Then at the conclusion of your trip, on your way home, return to the ‘real world’ by stopping in Santa Barbara and see the tree-lined State Street for great shopping, dining and beautiful architecture!

SANTA YNEZ RECREATION AREA:
The heart of this beautiful area is the Santa Ynez River, the longest stretch of Free-flowing River in Southern California. The recreation facilities in Santa Ynez Canyon provide a good place to enjoy the river. Self-guided nature trails, swimming, fishing, picnicking and even ATV access routes are available.
CAMPGROUND INFO:
Located just 20 miles north of Santa Barbara at 1200’ elevation, Upper Oso Campground has oak trees and a seasonal creek running through. The spacious sites we’ve reserved (#14-22) can accommodate a large group with room to spread out. Wilderness trails lead directly from the campground north to San Rafael and other destinations.   There is running water, flush toilets, picnic tables, fire pits, barbeques, and paved roads. Firewood is sold at the site. Both RVs and tenters are welcome on this trip (max length 30’), no hook-ups, quiet hours 10:00pm-6:00am.   Dogs must remain leashed.

WHAT TO BRING:
Bring and/or buy your food supplies prior to arriving. No grocery stores are close by; however, a small general store within 5 miles (on Paradise Rd) sells soda and snacks.
Provide your own shelter (tent/RV), cooking and sleep gear.
You are responsible for your own meals except for the Saturday evening potluck dinner. For this special event, please bring a dish to feed 4-6 people (either a main entrée, side dish, dessert,
and your favorite drinks). I will provide soft drinks, plates, napkins and silverware.
There is a cost sharing fee for this trip.  I am a volunteer trip-leader for an all volunteer, gay, non-profit California based hiking and camping organization called The Great Outdoors (not to be confused with where you are seeing this the GAY Outdoors!)  This trip is being offered to BOTH Great Outdoors members and Gay outdoor members.  The cost-sharing fee for this trip is $45/person.  There will be a registration form, waiver and payment due before the trip.  This is a great way to meet some people into the same activities as you; people of all ages, ethnicities, types and from all walks of life.  (note: The GREAT Outdoors is non-exclusionary and therefore our events are open to Gays and Lesbians...and our friends!)  Any questions or you want to sign-up, buddy me or e-mail me through Gay Outdoors.   Thank you!
