Sea Kayak Ogunquit #Two Sat. Oct. 10
Software problems have required that I delete and resubmit my profile and this trip again - my apologies.
The ocean water is still warm and the crowds are gone. The sun, low in the sky, makes Ogunquit particularly beautiful. The tide will be coming in all day too. This is a repeat of an earlier trip (see trip report) and may be the last sea kayaking of the year without special cold weather gear. Meet at the River Road parking lot @ 11 AM and bring lunch to eat during the paddle.
If you are joining the trip, make sure to sign up here on the GO website and make sure you include last minute contact information in case I must cancel the trip. If no one signs up here and/or the weather is severe, the trip is cancelled.
The Ogunquit River is a beautiful tidal sand-dune river. The sandy beach is one of the finest in Maine with a large gay section somewhat beyond the crowds. The rocks on the Marginal Way and the Cliffs are spectacular. Perkins Cove and its drawbridge from a kayak is far nicer - and right there by kayak is the beautiful grounds of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. I will gear the trip to the skill level that we have (and even make it an instruction trip if that is the participant sentiment) but you must have paddled a real kayak before or be willing to do so on this trip. Sit on top kayaks do not work for longer distances like this one. If the members of the trip have the skill and equipment etc., we might paddle out onto the Ocean. To do so, you will need a kayak with a spray skirt and you will have to have done a wet exit with spray skirt on as practice sometime before and/or at the beginning of the trip (they are fun too).
Driving Directions: From Massachusetts take I95 North into Maine and take the last exit before the Maine Turnpike Toll (exit 7), turn right at end of the ramp and go to the traffic light and turn left onto Route 1 North. Get into Ogunquit center after about 5 miles on Route 1 North then, at the awful intersection with no traffic light, take the second right onto Ocean St. (they may call it Beach St. now, it changes) and go down about a block and turn left on River St. where you will find the $20 (in-season, less or free off-season) all-day parking and the put-in.
Meet at this River Road all-day parking lot by 11 AM to make sure that we get a parking space on a holiday weekend, to get an early start on the incoming tide, and to have time to go get our lunch. If you are not there and parked by 11:30 AM, we will leave without you. We put-in right there at the parking lot. Paddle up the river to the gay beach, maybe have lunch on the water, maybe paddle out to Perkins Cove and have lunch there if the seas are 2 – 4 feet or less, and maybe paddle down to the 200 foot Cliffs below the Cliff house.
Bring, for in your kayak: plenty of water to drink, sun screen, money or credit card for a restaurant, extra clothing/towel/foot protection/booties, first aid stuff such as any medication you must take, etc.
Skill level: If the trip has participants who have sea kayaked on the open ocean before with competence, then we will paddle out to Perkins cove etc. conditions permitting. If our trip is primarily novice in skill level (never done a wet exit with spray skirt, never paddled long distance in the ocean) then we will stick to the river. If you are unsure, send me an email and a good time to phone you so we can discuss.
Kayak Rentals: Expensive and difficult to find (Charles River Kayak at the intersection of Routes 128 and 30 in Newton, MA is about the only reliable place). If you do rent, try to get a fiberglass or Kevlar kayak and do a wet exit right there at the rental place if they will let you so that you can get a spray skirt with the rental. If we do not go into the ocean itself, you do not need a spray skirt for this trip.
