About this event

Itinerary:

We will do a ~10 mile ridgetop & valley loop south of Tussey Mountain in Rothrock State Forest.  Hiking will begin from Treaster Kettle Road and proceed up a gas line cut to the Tussey Mountain Trail trailhead.  This trail will ascend approximately 1190 feet over 1.75 miles to the ridgetop.  We will follow the trail 2.5 miles to the Kettle Trail and descend about 100'.  We will follow the Kettle Trail, Lonberger Path, and Jean Aron Path to the Bear Meadows Natural area.  Next, we will follow the John Wert Path along Sinking Creek approximately 2.1 miles, descending to our original altitude.  Finally, we will walk Thickhead Mountain Road, approx 1.75 miles, back to the cars.

The hike includes several decent views of nearby valleys, ridgetop hiking, valley hiking through the Ridge & Valley region of the Alleghenies.

Hikers may head into Boalsburg or State College afterwards for a bite to eat.

Overall Length:  ~10 miles

Overall Elevation Change: ~1190 feet

Logistics:

Meet at the State College Area High School SOUTH building parking lot (650 Westerly Parkway, State College PA 16801) at noon.  From there we will drive ~30 minutes to the trailhead.

All trails in Rothrock State Forest are extremely rocky.  Hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots and bring poles if desired.  Hike will be through both unshaded ridgetops and thick forest valleys - wear sunscreen & bug spray as needed.  Bring water, a snack, and a flashlight.

I hike in all weather, but will cancel the hike if storms are forecast.  I will notify hikers as early as possible.
