The trip report

MT. MARTHA AND OWL’S HEAD HIKE

We selected these peaks because it was far from the low pressure system running off the coast. The forecast was for improving skies in the afternoon and we ended up with sunny weather! Cool temps and a breeze made for good hiking weather. Alpine flowers are out and always a treat to see. The distance is short but it’s a steady ascent to Mt. Martha.

From Mt. Martha, there are great views of the entire Presidential Range, Crawford Notch and Franconia Ridge [from a separate outlook near the fire tower footings.] One of the reason’s we love this hike is the high ridge walk on Martha’s Mile to Owl’s Head with views through the trees, its lush forest and abundant wildflowers. We had Owl’s Head all to ourselves enjoying one of the most scenic vistas in the White Mountains!

On the return, we cleared a couple of blowdowns; there is one notable blowdown left on Martha’s Mile requiring possibly a chainsaw. Did not see many hikers on the trail: a father and son, a large family with a couple of dogs, a small group struggling to ascend, a solo hiker with his dog, and a couple. A really nice day in the mountains in northern New Hampshire with excellent hiking weather.
