Mt. Tecumseh Hike

Please join us for a (relatively easy) lovely winter hike!

Details

Please join me for a hike on the smallest of New Hampshire's official 4,000 footers (standing at 4,003 feet tall) which sits adjacent to the Waterville Valley Ski area and there is a large parking lot off of Ski Area Road. It’s just under 5 miles with 2200 ft elevation gain. There may be some ice and a few inches of snow- light traction devices are mandatory and bring snowshoes just in case, could leave in our cars but good to bring. The hike will take approx. 4-5 hours depending upon there group. The route avoids the ski folks, and the trail should be packed down, but there could be a crowd (compared to other winter hikes) so we should still start on the earlier side. If folks are up for it, we could grab a beer or burger at the Mad River Tavern in Campton afterwards. We meet up at Waterville Valley Ski Area parking. Then we will follow the Mount Tecumseh Trail 1.2 miles to a viewpoint, then go another 1 (steep) mile to the cross trail between the Tecumseh Trail and the Sosman trail. From there, the summit is 0.3 miles away. The loop around the summit can be a bit narrow and there are limited views, but it is still beautiful! https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/new-hampshire/mount-tecumseh-trail-via-waterville-trailhead. It looks like there will be 2-3 inches of snow mid-week, and maybe 1 inch Friday night. Temperature looks great (just around freezing and no wind) so should be a great day. I will monitor the weather and send an update by Thursday. Please have the necessary winter gear/clothing needed to hike this time of year including the appropriate amount of layers to keep your core body warm. We recommend winter hiking boots (over regular), definitely micro spikes, wool hat, gloves, hand warmers, warm layers and no cotton. Carry at least 1-2 liters of water, lunch and snacks.

Directions

PARKING: To the Waterville Valley Ski Area Parking Lot #1 / Mount Tecumseh Trail head XF8C+3R Waterville Valley, New Hampshire From I-93, take exit 28 for Route 49. At the bottom of the exit ramp, head East on Route 49. After 10.4 miles, turn left onto Tripoli Road. Follow Tripoli Road for 1.2 miles, then turn left onto the Waterville Valley Ski Area access road (Fire Route 30). Follow the access road for 0.6 mile which will bring you to the parking areas and the ski lodge. Look for parking lot #1 (That is the closest parking lot to where the Mount Tecumseh trail begins.) but depending on the number of folks find whatever parking you can and just walk over to the trailhead. FYI, I drive a white Honda CRV.

I'm looking for a ride from the Boston area, I can meet anywhere and happy to cover the gas. Thank you, and hope to hear from any kind soul, LOL

OK guys so here's the deal. The weather forecast for the summit is great, however the forecast for Waterville Valley is snow Friday night to Saturday ending around 6am (if correct). 5-7" of snow. So the hike will be fine, but the driving in the morning could be tricky. I have brand new tires and the snow in Ipswich will be 3-4" and also ending around 6am. So willing to consider going for it. What do you guys think? I don't like hiking on Sundays but would consider pushing it to Sunday too.

Trail report from Wednesday from "Mainebeefman" gmail's account (ahem)

Parked at ski area. Lot was quite full, ended up in lot 8 which was just a short walk to trailhead. Trail was in super shape for the most part. Micros until the first viewpoint then Snowshoes for rest of the hike. Took the upper part of Mt Tecumseh trail to the summit and found it postholed in spots.

Allegro what do you mean by meet anywhere? Do you have a car and can you drive to Ipswich super early on Saturday or Sunday if we push it?

and sorry for all the friggin emails, there is a character count limit on this text box
Allegro · Feb 19, 2026
I am sorry for spamming everyone's mailbox too

@dpbyrnes: yes to Sunday for me because safety first. Yes i do have a car just not prefer to drive alone, I can meet in Ipswich or , preferably, meet in Kohls in Manchester NH if that's ok? My number is 617 903 7206 just in case you need. Thank you

Hey guys. Although only light snow is predicted for Saturday morning, that is still enough to make a long drive pretty uncomfortable. The climb to Tecumseh gets steep so it's not terribly comfortable in snowshoes. I'm thinking that Sunday would be a more favorable day for the hike. Roads will be clear and hopefully the trail, which is popular, will be packed down by then. Does that make sense?

OK let's push it to Sunday then, but start at 8am. With fresh snow the skiers will be out big time. Allegro, Kohls in Bedford is off the route a bit, how about the Concord Park & Ride Parking lot, Stickney Ave, Concord, NH 03301. It's just a little further up, free and right off Rt. 93.
Allegro · Feb 19, 2026
@dpbyrnes: yes Concord Park & Drive upper lot works for me, I will be there at 6:30? But take your time, i think the drive from there is 1 hour & 6 mins. Thanks again
baezfred · Feb 19, 2026
who's bringing the doughnuts and coffee?
A member · Feb 20, 2026
lol! sorry no donuts or coffee. I'll be there around 6:30 Matt. White Honda CRV 4464VZ.
