Scenic bike ride through Boston and neighboring communities
Details
POSTPONED *AGAIN* - NOW SUN 9/17!
Join Alan and Neil in exploring the streets and trails between the Seaport District in Boston and the Encore Casino area in Everett. Starting from South Station, we will cross Fort Point Channel and loop through the Seaport, where we’ll see the stark contrast of vintage piers and multiple new buildings. From Seaport, we will take a waterfront path through Boston and the North End. Next we’ll go through North Point Park, then ride the new Green Line Extension Bike Path. From there we’ll ride along street paths through Somerville, and on to Assembly Row. After stopping here, we will cross the Mystic and Malden Rivers, then go through Gateway Park to the yellow-bricked pathways of the Encore Casino. After visiting the beautiful grounds of Encore, we will bike through Charlestown and Cambridge, then return though Boston to South Station.
Note that this is an urban ride! Only a small portion of it will be on bike paths with no vehicles. Much of the ride will be on city streets, not all of which have bike lanes. While we've chosen the safest route we could, there WILL be car and truck traffic. If riding among automobiles is uncomfortable for you, do not register for this ride. While any type of bike will work for the ride, city/hybrid bikes are best suited for it. If you only have a road/racing or rmountain bike, consider renting a Blue Bike from one of their multiple locations around the area.
Bring plenty of water and a sandwich and/or snacks. There may not be time to buy these en route. We’ll stop to eat around 12:30, probably around Assembly row. Also be prepared for a range of temperatures. It could be cool at the beginning and end of the ride, and considerably warmer midday.
Total ride distance: about 22 mi.
Please send your external email address and cell # to Neil, using the GO email function.
Directions
Meeting place: Main entrance to South Station, corner of Atlantic Ave. and Summer St. in Boston.
Transportation: On weekends, bicycles may be brought on Orange, Blue and Red Line trains. However, they are always prohibited on the Green Line. We strongly recommend parking at a 'T' station outside of the city and taking the subway into town. Quincy Adams, Braintree, or Alewife on the Red Line are good options. Oak Grove, Malden Center, Sullivan Square, or Forest Hills are Orange Line parking options. Blue Line stations with parking include Suffolk Downs and Orient Heights.
Directions from the Red Line: Take the subway to South Station.
Directions from Orange Line: Get off at Downtown Crossing. Walk and/or ride your bike southeast on Summer St., away from the Boston Common, to South Station at the corner of Atlantic Ave.
Directions from Blue Line: Get off at Aquarium. Walk and/or ride your bike south on Atlantic Ave., away from the Marriott Long Wharf hotel, to South Station.
Downtown Parking: If you plan to drive and park in Boston, your best deal is the Post Office Square Parking Garage located at 55 Pearl Street. It has elevators that can accommodate bikes from the parking levels to the street. Their weekend parking is posted at $9 per day. https://www.posquare.com/rates-hours/
Note: If you take the 'T', you may have to carry your bike up/down one or more sets of stairs.
