A Walk Through Winter's Wonderland
A Spirited Hike to Mt. Liberty
A Walk Through Winter's Wonderland
Details
Mt. Liberty is a dynamic summit. The ascent is not particularly rugged; rather, it is a steady climb up and gives the heart, lungs and head a chance to get some crisp winter air deep inside your body. Refreshing, cleansing, spiriting – all that comes to mind when I’m outside enjoying winter. The peaks of Mt. Liberty and Mt. Flume will surely reward on you on that level. Join me for a spirited hike this Saturday, February 9th to the top of two sweet peaks.
Winter is well entrenched up north and while today, February 4th, it was 60 degrees in greater Boston, don’t count on that for Saturday. You will need your snow shoes, micro spikes or crampons, winter clothing – NO COTTON – in addition to puff coat, gloves, hat, face mask, goggles, extra clothing – anything you deem necessary for your comfort. Lunch, snacks and two liters of water a must. Everything you bring should fit neatly into your day pack. A thermos of hot apple cider always hits the spot too!
Hiking for me is a chance to escape the world around me. I check real life at the front door and jump into my Honda for a day of total freedom. No cell phone, no computers, no texting, no news – just me, my footsteps, my thoughts and the good hiking buds that come for the journey. That is the joy of the trail. We have to return to the ordinary soon enough – for one day let us disconnect and immerse ourselves in one of nature’s best play lands – the wilderness.
Total mileage for the day is 11 Miles. We will walk the .8 miles from the Basin along a flat path to the trail head. We'll follow this roughly .6 miles to the junction where the real ascent begins. We ascend the Liberty Springs Trail for 2.3 miles arriving just below Mt. Liberty. 3/10th of a mile later and you will be atop this magnificent summit. A short dip off the backside into the col and 1.5 miles later you are atop Mt. Flume. We reverse the journey.
Directions
Directions: From routes 93 North or South take the exit for The Basin parking lot on the 93 Northbound side of the highway. I will be driving a gray Honda CRV.
