AT Hike - Carvers Gap to US 19E

This will be a south to north hike of 13.4 miles on the AT.

Details

This is a 13.4 mile hke on the AT.

This hike will be mostly on the Roan Massif, a chain of high peaks in eastern Tennessee. The hike will meander along the Tennessee/North Carolina border. There will be a lot of "balds" on this section of the AT which is almost as high as the Smokies. The Roan Massif was not part of the original AT, but was inluded in the late 1960's.

4.7 miles into the hike we will cross the historic Overmountain Victory Trail. The Overmountain Men were colonists that defied King George's 1763 proclamation that English settlers must stay east of the mountains. They and their families settled in Sycamore Shoals, Tennessee. In 1780 a troop of Overmountain men, led by John Sevier, passed through the gap on their way to King's Mountain, SC to help defeat the southern British army there.

This hike will have several steep ups with a high point of 5807 feet near the begining of the hike and a low point of 2880 feet at the end of the hike.

With the many balds on this hike, we should get some great views of the autumn color.

Plan on spending 8 to 9 hours on the trail.

This hike will be a one way hike and will require an auto shuttle.
