Shelburne Moriah Mountain

Looking for a 3000 footer with excellent views? Then join us for this hike.

Details

The date of this hike has changed to Sunday 7/29 (postponed one day so the weather is better).

We will first hike 4 miles along the Shelburne trail to its junction with the Kenduskeag trail. We will then hike 1.4 miles of the Kenduskeag trail up to the flat, ledgy summit of Shelburne Moriah (elevation 3735 ft). The ledges of the mountain offer great views, but the views are obtained with some effort. Note there are four crossings of the east branch of East Brook along the Shelburne trail. The Kenduskeag trail includes some steep parts and a couple of ledge scrambles. After enjoying the summit, we will retrace our steps back down the trails used to ascend.

Participants should have sturdy hiking boots and a day pack containing at least 2 liters of water, lunch/snacks, outer shell (wind/waterproof), and extra clothing. Heavy rain will cancel (due to brook crossings and exposure to weather at the mountain top).

Elevation Gain: 3000 feet
Total Distance: 10.8 miles
Estimated Duration: 7.5 - 8.5 hours

Directions

We will meet at an abandoned wayside area on the southside of US 2.   I drive a blue Subaru Forester.

From Gorham, New Hampshire
Drive east on US 2 about 9 mi.   Watch for a sign (Parking) and hiker symbol marking the wayside area and turn right.

From Maine
Drive west on US 2 across the Maine/New Hampshire border for another 0.2 miles. Watch for a sign (Parking) and hiker symbol marking the wayside area and turn left.

After everyone arrives at the wayside area, we will carpool/drive the remaining 1 mile (gravel forest road) to the trailhead.
