Mts Adams and Madison Bushwhack Hike

A loop hike around Mounts Adam and Madison via the Great Gulf and the old Adams Slide Trail.

Details

Join me for this strenuous loop hike to NH's second highest peak (Mt Adams - 5774') via the old Adams Slide Trail...taking in Mt Madison (5367') on the return.  This hike will feature an approach through the Great Gulf Wilderness utilizing the Great Gulf and Buttress Trails to the base of the Adams Slide.  This slide was a maintained trail until its closure in 1971.  It is still partially marked (blazes and cairns) and leaves from the Buttress Trail in an open scree field.  This old trail climbs roughly 2270 feet in 1.25 miles and joins the Star Lake Trail just beneath the summit.  We will return over Mt Madison and descend via the Osgood Trail.  On a clear day the views are spectacular from the summits and at points during the ascent and descent.

Total Distance and Elevation Gain:  Roughly 14.5 miles with approximately 4980 feet in cumulative elevation gain.

Total Time:  10 - 11 hours depending on breaks and group's speed.

Rain or harsh weather may postpone to another date or cancel, as appropriate.

What to Bring:  Typical early-spring hiking gear should be appropriate:  convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks, a windbreaker/raingear and extra layers (e.g. fleece)...or winter jacket/parka depending on forecasted conditions.  You should also bring along microspikes and possibly carry snowshoes, just in case.  Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water (at least 2-L).  Optionally, pack sunscreen and anything else that you may require for a day hike.

Carpooling:  Contact other participants or the trip leader to arrange for a rideshare to the trailhead.

Afterwards:  If there is sufficient interest, we will have drinks and/or dinner in the Gorham area.

Directions

We'll meet up at the Great Gulf Wilderness Trailhead on Route 16.  From the eastern intersection of Routes 2 & 16 in Gorham, travel south along White Mountain Road (Route 16) for 6.3 miles.  From the intersection of Routes 302 and 16 in Intervale, travel north on Pinkham Notch Road (Route 16) for 16 miles.
