Cannon Mountain Loop Hike
A loop hike to Cannon Mountain, returning via its backside to Lonesome Lake.
Details
Cannon Mountain (4100') is also known as Profile Mountain, referring to the magnificent profile of the Old Man of the Mountain, which collapsed in May 2003. We'll utilize the Hi-Cannon Trail from the Lafayette Campground. This trail climbs aggressively to a number of ledges which provide magnificent views over Lonesome Lake. The trail then moderates as it approaches the summit, with its weather station and viewing platform. On the return, we'll descend the relatively steep Kinsman Ridge Trail to the junction with the Lonesome Lake Trail, where we'll head to the hut and shores of the lake before returning to the trailhead at Lafayette Place Campground.
Total Distance and Elevation Gain: 6.3 miles with approximately 2450 feet in accumulative elevation gain.
Total Time: Approximately 6 hours depending on breaks and group's speed.
Harsh weather may postpone to another date or cancel, as appropriate.
What to Bring: Typical summer hiking gear should be appropriate: convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks, a windbreaker/raingear. Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water (at least 2-L). Optionally, pack sunscreen and anything else that you may require for a day hike.
Carpooling: Contact other participants or the trip leader to arrange for a rideshare to the trailhead.
Afterwards: If there is sufficient interest, we will have drinks and/or dinner in the area...probably at the Woodstock Inn.
Directions
From the Lincoln (Exit 32) continue following Route 93 North for another 9.6 miles to Exit 34B. Cross under the highway and reverse direction by taking Route 93 South for 2.1 miles to the Lafayette Place Campground. Immediately take the left into the parking lot...additional parking is just past the ranger cabin. Look for a gray Hyundai Elantra.
For GPS Users: Layfayette Place Campground parking (44.142243,-71.683647).
