A day on the river

An eight-mile whitewater paddle on the upper Deerfield River

A day on the river

An eight-mile whitewater paddle on the upper Deerfield River

Details

Join us for an afternoon river run on the upper Deerfiled in the northern Berkshires.  We'll paddle eight miles of the river's Fife Brook section, which has lots of quickwater, dozens of Class I rapids, a handful of Class II rapids, and Zoar Gap, a Class III rapid that can be run or portaged (see photo below).   We'll be on the water for about four hours, allowing time to play in the rapids and swimming holes, and to lunch on a beach on the bank or a rock in the middle.  Canoists and kayakers welcome.  For those who would like, camaraderie will continue afterwards over beers and dinner in Shelburne Falls.  Rain date Sunday, September 14.

The Deerfield is among New England's pre-eminent paddling rivers, clear and cool, providing a diversity of rapids, passing through some of the State's most densely forested areas, and attracting paddlers from throughout the region.  Join us!

Directions

We'll rendezvous at the put-in on River Road in Florida, MA, 1/4 mile below the dam of the Lower Bear Swamp reservoir (GoogleMap "Lower Bear Swamp reservoir, Florida, MA").
