Spring Hike on Welch-Dickey Trail
Spring warm-up hike on the always popular Welch-Dickey Loop Trail
Spring Hike on Welch-Dickey Trail
Spring warm-up hike on the always popular Welch-Dickey Loop Trail
Details
With its southern exposure, the Welch-Dickey Loop Trail is among the first to be clear of snow in the spring, and after such a brutal winter, I am sure we will all be very eager to get our hiking legs in shape sooner rather than later. This is also arguably one of the most rewarding hikes in NH's White Mountains which, as the AMC Guide always tells us, can be accomplished with a modest effort. It is the type of hike that offers pretty much everything in the Whites: exposed ledges with great views of Waterville Valley; steep rock faces; alpine vegetation. All of it in moderate amounts, to make it easier on the legs.
Because this is April, one never knows how the weather will behave, so bring layers of hiking clothes (jacket, fleece, polyester t-shirt, sturdy hiking boots). Also bring lunch and/or snacks to share, as we will likely linger on the ledges if the weather is nice.
This is a dog friendly hike, but bring a leash. Inclement weather will cancel.
Directions
We will meet at the parking lot for the Welch-Dickey Trailhead. To get there, take exit 28 on I-93 (Campton/Waterville Valley), and go east on Rt. 49 (Mad River Road). About 4.5 miles after you pass the Campton dam, turn left onto Upper Mad River Road. Continue a bit uphill on this road, for 0.7 miles to Orris Road, where there is a sign for the Welch-Dickey Trail. Orris will sort of dead end on the trailhead parking lot.
