Mt Madison and Mt Adams on Snowshoes

Mt Madison & Mt Adams Snowshoeing

Mt Madison and Mt Adams on Snowshoes

Details

On Saturday January 25th, get ready for a great winter hike... winter hiking experience is required. Snowshoes as well. We don't want to destroy the trails!!! Dogs not permitted

10 miles, more than 5000 feet in elevation gain. at least 8 hours in the wood and above tree line.

Description of the journey

Departure from Appalachia Trailhead and then...

Valleyway up to the Madison Spring Hut

Appalachian Trail to reach the summit of Madison.

Back to the hut, Gulfside Trail and Airlne to reach the top of Adams.

Back to he hut and back to te cars by Valleyway.

Valleyway is the most popular trail and is most of the time well broken and not technical.

Very bad weather above tree line may force us to change our plan during the day.

Other information

We need to get ready for big cold weather. Bring appropriate winter gear and clothing. We never know what to expect at about 5000 feet of altitude.

Equipment recommanded

Snowshoes, other traction such microspike could be usefull based on the trail conditions.

Warm clothing suitable for above tree line exposure (Merino wool, fleece, hard shell, Down jacket) not cotton please!!! Make sure you have boot and sox that will keep your feet dry and warm... Oh yeah, a good confortable pack is usually not an option for long winter hike. Enough water, food and snack obviously. Face mask and ski goggle are recommanded too.

I will be staying in North Conway the night before. I booked a room at Eastern Slope Inn. There is a gym and swimming pool.

We can all get to Mr Pizza in Gorham or Flatbread Co in North Conway after the expedition since we might be starving!!!

Directions

Follow NH Route 16 north through Pinkham Notch to the town of Gorham and turn left (West) on Highway 2. The Appalachia Trailhead parking is on the left roughly 6 miles west of Gorham. I will be there with a grey Mazda 3 Hatchback.

Or take I-93 North, then US Highway 3 North, and then NH Route 115. Turn right (east) on US highway 2 and drive about 12 miles to reach the trailhead.

Coming from North, take I-93 South and then exit 40. Follow Route 302 up to Twin Mountan. Then US Highway 3 North (left), and then NH Route 115. Turn right on US highway 2 and drive about 12 miles to reach the trailhead.

For GPS users, position is N44 22.290 W71 17.344

Seems that people who went there yesterday wore light traction the whole way. However, i will still carry my snow shoes but hillsounds or microspikes might be good alternates
