Mt Garfield

A hike up Mt Garfield, A 4,500 foot peak in the White Mountains

Details

The most popular route to get to the top is to hike the Garfield Trail (4.8 miles) to it's T-junction with the Garfield Ridge Trail (0.2 miles) which is a steep climb and at parts a easy scramble to the summit. The Garfield trail is well-know for it's relative ease to dayhikes due to the fact that it follows an old fire and tractor road to the top. The summit is open and has a Alpine ecosystem. Weather permitting the summit provides uninhibited 360 degree views. Be prepared for cold and or frozen conditions on the open Alpine summit. Please bring a head lamp for this trip as we will be dealing with a sunset around 430pm. On that note this will be quicker moving hike also due to the shortened day light hours.

Directions

Take I-93 to exit 36, Route 3 towards Twin Mountain. Stay on Route 3 until you see a sign for Gale River dirt road on your right just before the Gale river. If you pass the first intersection there is another road intersection across the Gale river which is better marked. Take the Gale River RD to the Garfield Trail parking area...I don't know if there is a parking fee.
