Little Rock Pond Loop Hike

A Loop Hike over Green Mountain and around Little Rock Pond.

Little Rock Pond Loop Hike

A Loop Hike over Green Mountain and around Little Rock Pond.

Details

Join me for this picturesque loop hike visiting the ledges of Green Mountain and the shores of Little Rock Pond...one of the more beautiful and popular high elevation ponds in Vermont.  We'll take the Green Mountain Trail, which traverses a ridgeline with several spur trails that lead to excellent views of the surrounding mountains and Little Rock Pond.  At the end of the ridge the trail descends to the shores of Little Rock Pond, where a trail encircles the pond.  Afterwards we'll take the AT/LT back to the trailhead.

Total Distance and Elevation Gain:  7.1-7.5 miles with approximately 1700 feet of accumulative elevation gain.

Total Time:  5-6 hours or more depending on breaks and lunch.

Rain or harsh weather will postpone to another date, as appropriate.

What to Bring:  Typical fall hiking gear should be appropriate:  convertible hiking pants or shorts, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks, extra layer(s) (as needed) and a windbreaker/raingear (just in case).  Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water (at least 2-L).  Optionally, pack bug repellent and sunscreen and anything else that you may require for a day hike.

Afterwards:  We should be completed with the hike by 4:00PM.  If there is sufficient interest, we can grab a light dinner/drinks in Danby.

Directions

From Route 7 in Danby, turn east onto Brooklyn Rd. (Forest Road 10/Mt. Tabor Road). Take FR 10 for approximately 3.5 miles to the Appalachian/Long Trail crossing. The parking area is found on the south side of the road.  Look for a grey Hyundai Elantra.

NOTE:  Brooklyn Road is approximately 12.4 miles north of Manchester (from the Rt 30 and 7 junction) or 16.8 miles south of Rutland (from the Rt 4 and 7 junction).

For GPS Users:  Brooklyn Road, Wallingford/Danby, VT (43.372757,-72.962668) (trailhead).

Howie-Would you like to catch a ride with me? I'll be leaving at 8. Likewise, if anyone else would like to carpool, I'd be glad to pick you up along Route 30 from Newfane out. Tom

Hey, Howie and Steve - I got your note about carpooling from the West Dummerston covered bridge commuter lot, Steve. If you don't mind me jumping a ride with you there at 8 AM, Steve, that would be great. So, Howie, looks like I won't be driving all the way up to Danby. If you'd like to catch a ride with Steve, too, you're welcome to ride with me to the covered bridge. Tom

I'll be at the Dummerston municipal lot next to the covered bridge just before 8AM (Rt. 30) then. See you then, Tom...and anyone else wishing to carpool from here.

Hey, Steve - Just checked my e-mails and have got one here from Howie saying he'd be riding with me. If you can figure him in as a rider with you from the covered bridge, too, that would be great! - See ya then- Tom
