Flags on the 48 (9/11 memorial hike) 2013 - North Twin Mountain
Details
The Twins are two lofty peaks that rise above the Pemigewasset Wilderness, offering spectacular views. We will be hiking to North Twin.
If you like a good challenge and beautiful views, then this hike is for you. On a clear day, you will experience outstanding views.
Totals:
Round Trip: 8.6 miles
Book Time: 5 hours 50 minutes round trip
Elevation Gain: 2950 ft
This is a strenuous hike. There is one stream crossing that may be difficult in high water, although this should not be an issue this time of year.
Details:
Our hike will begin at the North Twin Trailhead.
We will bypass the first two stream crossings using a herd path but the third one can be difficult in high water. You may want to bring trekking poles and spare socks in case your boots get wet.
We will continue along the trail to the Summit of North Twin Mtn. [4761']. There is a beautiful outlook with magnificent views just before the true summit so be sure to bring your camera! Soon after the outlook is the actual peak, which is wooded, with another nearby outlook.
We will all need to take turns carrying the flagpole up and down the mountain.
The flag will be raised from 12 noon to 2 pm. We can potentially see well over half of the flags on other peaks if it is a clear day.
Lodging Option: Mike was nice enough to let us use his house for the weekend in Waterville Valley. We have 8 bunks available with linen for Friday and/or Saturday night for $20. You can use the kitchen facilities and store beverages/food in the fridge. There is coffee available in the morning and a continental breakfast. Please contact Rick (HikerBiker) to RSVP. SPACE IS LIMITED TO EIGHT GUYS.
Directions
From the south, take I-93 north through Franconia Notch and get off at exit 35 onto Route 3 North. Go about 7.4 miles, and take a right onto Haystack Road (FR304). Continue on Haystack Road for 2.5 miles to the parking area.
Please arrive before 8:30 am and be ready to begin the hike promptly at 8:30.
