Blackhead Range Loop Hike

A Loop Hike over the Blackhead Mountain Range taking in Blackhead, Black Dome and Thomas Cole Peaks.

Details

Join me for this picturesque hike around three of the 3500' peaks in the Catskills.  This loop hike will traverse the summits of Blackhead, Black Dome and Thomas Cole Peaks (3942', 3985' and 3943', respectively).  The hike is roughly 8.6 miles and there are numerous ledges, which provide nice views into the surrounding wilderness.  This hike has some short steep sections, that will require some rock scrambling...one in particular is about a 30-40 degree climb for about 100-150 feet.

Total Distance and Elevation Gain:  8.6 miles with approximately 2800' feet in accumulative elevation gain.

Total Time:  7-8 hours or more depending on breaks and group's speed.

Rain or harsh weather will postpone until another date, as appropriate.

Camping Option:  Contact me, if you're interested in camping Friday and/or Saturday night.  I would be happy to set something up or provide details to share my site.

What to Bring:  Typical summer hiking gear should be appropriate:  convertible hiking pants or shorts, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks, extra layer(s) (as needed) and a windbreaker/raingear (just in case).  Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water (at least 2-L).  Optionally, pack bug repellent and sunscreen and anything else that you may require for a day hike.

Afterwards:  We should be completed with the hike by 5:00PM.  If there is sufficient interest, we can grab dinner/drinks in Tannersville.

Directions

Take exit 20 off the Thruway (I-87) for NY-32 toward Saugerties and continue on Route 32 N for 6.5 miles.  Turn onto Route 32A N and follow this for 1.9 miles.  Turn onto Route 23A West and continue for 5.5 miles.  Just prior to the village of Tannersville, turn right onto County Road 25 and follow this for 2.8 miles...and then stay right to turn onto County Road 23C for another 4.0 miles.  At the intersection with County Road 40, take this right and follow for 1.9 miles to County Road 56.  Take County Road 56 to the end where you'll find the trailhead (approximately 4.3 miles).

From the Northway/Thruway (I-87) it should take approximately 51 minutes (27.5 miles).

For GPS Users:  42.288866, -74.11339 (trailhead); 5875-5899 County Road 56; Maplecrest, NY 12454.
