Ortega Exploratory Hike

Trek into the Ortega region

Ortega Exploratory Hike

Trek into the Ortega region

Details

I've hiked up here a couple times & there is a whole network of trails to explore... several deep into the undeveloped area between Rancho Santa Margarita and Lake Elsinore. There is a peak just south of 74, but the scenery on the trails north is much better, so while there's no specific peak that I'm targeting, I'm going to see how far I can get into the back country (probably 12-15 miles round trip) and enjoy the weather in Southern California.

Directions

Trail head is located on Ortega Highway, around 21 miles east of I-5 and 10 miles west of Lake Elsinore, right at the parking lot across from the "Candy Store" (Ortega Country Cottage). Make sure to bring a National Forest Adventure Pass and keep it displayed in your parked vehicle.

I should be there about 8a, bundling up my hiking poles and water, lathering on sunscreen, sunglasses & tattered brown baseball cap.
