Mts. Liberty and Flume via Osseo Trail

Hike the southern end of Franconia ridge from the Pemigewasset Wilderness via the Osseo Trail

Details
We will start at the WMNF Visitor's Center in Lincoln Woods (1,160 ft.) and head up the Wilderness Trail to the Osseo Trail. From there we will head on up to Mt. Flume (4,328 ft.) from the "backside" or Pemigewasset Wilderness side, which offers a less commonly seen side of Franconia ridge. From Mt. Flume we will go over to Mt. Liberty (4,459 ft.), and down the Liberty Spring/Whitehouse Trail. This is close to an 11 mile hike, with over 3,000 ft. elevation gain. The distance, and the ups & downs will make this a pretty tough hike and a rather long day. We will keep a moderate pace, but you need to be in shape for this strenuous hike. You should also bring three liters of water, as you will need it. Alternately, if you have a filter-pump or carry iodine tablets, there is water along the lower elevations of the Osseo Trail and at the Liberty Spring tent site, where you can fill up and treat it. Also bring rain & wind proof gear; good comfortable sturdy boots; plenty of snacks and a good lunch. Severe inclement weather will cancel.
Directions
We will meet at the parking lot of the WMNF Visitor's Center/Ranger Station for the Lincoln Woods/Wilderness Trails, right off the Kancamagus Highway. To get there from I-93, get off at exit 32 and head east (through the town of Lincoln) on 112, the Kancamagus Highway. After the Loon Mountain ski resort continue east about 3 miles. Right after the Hancock Campground on your right, you will cross the Pemigewasset river on a short bridge. As soon as you cross the bridge you should see the sign, on your left, for the WMNF Visitor's Center. Turn left, and park near the bathrooms in the center of the parking area, where we will meet as a group. We need to spot cars at the Whitehouse Trail, and this will probably take about a half hour to accomplish. So be at the Lincoln Woods meeting point promptly at 8:30 a.m., so we can spot the cars quickly, and be able to start hiking by 9:00 a.m.
