Saint-Gaudens Nat'l Historic Site

We will visit the home and studio of 19th century sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in Cornish, N.H., and walk around the 150-acre grounds.

Details

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was a sculptor who made the bas relief memorial to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment which stands in front of the Massachusetts State House. An exact duplicate of the 54th Mass. Memorial is on the grounds in Cornish together with replicas of many other of his well-known statues which are located across the U.S.A. The National Park Service conducts tours of his house and studio so admission is $5. Participants should bring a lunch, because we will also explore and walk the trails which may have inspired Saint-Gaudens when he worked here a century ago. Teddy Roosevelt commissioned Saint-Gaudens to design a $20-gold piece which depicts "Liberty" carrying a torch which some numismatists have called the best-looking American coin. Hiking boots or shoes and lunch and drinks are important as I don't think there are any stores for several miles.

Directions

The Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site is on Route 12A, about 12 miles south of Lebanon, N.H., and 12 miles north of Claremont.
