Little Ball Mt and Hamilton Falls Hike

A Pleasant walk through Jamaica State Park

Details
Join me for this scenic 6.2-mile hike along the West River in Jamaica State Park, where we will check out the vistas atop Little Ball Mountain (1164') and also check out Hamilton Falls, one of the highest and most impressive waterfalls in Vermont (125' drop). We will start the hike on the blue-blazed Overlook Trail with its numerous vistas down to the village of Jamaica, the West River Valley and the Green Mountains to the west. After following a rock outcrop, the trail descends along a series of switchbacks, until it joins the West River Trail. We'll continue on this trail out to the spur trail along Cobb Brook, which leads to the base of Hamilton Falls. We will return to the West River Trail and follow it back to the trailhead and the winter parking area. Total distance: 6.2 miles with 800 feet elevation gain. This hike is not technically difficult, as half of the hike follows the gentle grade of an old railroad bed. Typical fall hiking gear should be appropriate: convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks and at least a windbreaker (and possibly fleece), as the ledges may be chilly and windy this time of year. It would be best to dress in non-cotton layers, as this time of year may be unpredictable. You may also want to pack traction (e.g. microspikes), if the weather suggests it. What to bring along: Bring along lunch, snacks, plenty of water and anything else you may require for a day hike. Afterwards: We'll grab dinner locally afterwards (probably towards Brattleboro), if there is sufficient interest.
Directions
Jamaica State Park is located in the village of Jamaica, VT, off VT Route 30. From Brattleboro (26mi, 45 minutes) follow the State Park sign on the right (north side) of the road as you enter the village. This is Depot Street and you will follow this to the parking area. From Manchester, VT (22mi, approx. half hour), watch for the sign on the left. We will meet at the winter parking area near the trailhead. FYI: no park fees are required during the off season.
