Mt Monadnock Hike

A Post-Thanksgiving Monadnock Hike via the Cliff Walk

Details

Join me for this 6.5-7.0 mile loop hike up Mt. Monadnock (3,165' elevation). We'll start at the Old Toll Road Trailhead and take the Parker Trail/Cliff Walk to the summit. This trail scrambles over rocks and ledges up to the open summit, where we'll break and have lunch. The return will be via Mont Rosa (a nice shoulder peak) and Fairy Springs. This will be by way of the Smith Summit Trail. Most of this is moderate in terrain with about half of it over open, exposed granite with some short steep stretches. NOTE: DOGS ARE NOT PERMITTED ON MT. MONADNOCK. THERE MAY BE A PARK FEE OF $4 (if there is an attendant at the trailhead). We'll begin the hike at 9:30 AM. The hike should be easily completed by 4 PM. Typical fall hiking gear should be appropriate: convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks and at least a windbreaker (and possibly fleece), as the summit may be chilly and windy this time of year. It would be best to dress in non-cotton layers, as this time of year may be unpredictable. You may also want to pack traction (e.g. microspikes), if the weather suggests it. What to bring along: Bring along lunch, snacks, plenty of water and anything else you may require for a day hike. Afterwards: We'll grab dinner locally afterwards, if there is sufficient interest (pizza at my place is an option).

Directions

The Old Toll Road parking lot is approximately 5.2 miles west of downtown Jaffrey on Rte. 124 (measured from the intersection of Rts 124 and 202). It's on the right-hand side of the road and clearly marked.
