Details
Recompence Shore State Park, Campground, and Organic farm on Casco Bay is really one of Maine's gems with pastures, cattle, ocean, and campsites. It is just 3 miles outside of Freeport and LL Bean. One would never know that such a rural feel could be had so close to such a famous (or infamous) shopping Mecca. The islands in the bay are home to Osprey and the water is clean, clear, and cold.
I am doing easy day trips like this because of injuries to shoulder and back so the distance paddled will be short (5 miles or so). For this trip, the tide is in our favor so we can put in around 10 AM at the Little River Bridge, have lunch near one of the several islands, and paddle up the Little River if we wish before the tide goes out and/or should it be too windy to go out into the bay.
This trip is for people with some experience who have paddled sea kayaks before. No sit on top kayaks allowed on this trip. Bring water, lunch for on the water, spray skirt (if you have one and only if you have done a wet exit with it fastened), life jacket, dry bag for extra clothes, sun block, first aid, etc.
KAYAK RENTALS ETC. One of the best sea kayaking stores, Lincoln Kayak, is located in Freeport. They make kevlar kayaks that weigh only 30 lbs! and most of the people in the store know what they are talking about (becoming rare these days). If you call ahead, they will rent you a kayak but the ion is limited. Tell them where we will be paddling.
If you are in the Boston Area, you can rent at Charles River Kayak, another very good place.
Directions
Meet at the Exit 17 - Route I 295 Rest Area at 9:30 AM If you are late, you take your chances that we have already left soon after the meeting time. We will drive from there to Exit 22, left into Freeport, right onto Route 1 South (the main drag), left onto Bow Street to Burnet Road, etc. should you want to meet us at the Little River Bridge Put-IN.
