Join me for this weekend featuring a 2-day paddle down the beautifully scenic Magalloway River into Lake Umbagog and a Memorial Day hike to Dixville Peak in Northern NH. On Saturday, we'll meet at the outfitter's base, assemble our gear and be driven up to Wilson Mills in Maine. There we will be put in and begin our paddle down the serene Magalloway River. Day One will include taking in the scenery, wildlife (moose, eagles, osprey, etc. can be seen), a short hike to explore the Dead Diamond River Gorge and the beautiful and remote Garfield Falls (40' main drop) and camping at Diamond Point. On Sunday we will break camp and continue the trip down the Magalloway to Lake Umbagog, exploring the shores and islands. We will be taken out just above the Errol Dam.
On Monday we'll drive to Dixville Notch (a short distance west of Errol) and ascend the "steep" trail at the top of the notch up to the impressive Table Rock (2500') with its magnificient views of the Balsams Grand Hotel and Wilderness. We will continue over to Dixville Peak (3360'), which also has views, but mostly to the south. This is a moderate hike of about 6 miles.
Kayaks will be available for rent ($32). The outfitter will provide transportation to Wilson Mills, paddles, life jackets, spray skirts and a full briefing on the area, with maps included. Wet suits may be available for rent as well.
Camping at Diamond Point is $10. Camping is also available at the outfitter's base in Errol for Friday and / or Sunday. Optionally, the Errol Motel offers good rates. Some supplies can also be gotten in Errol.
What to bring: At a minimum for the paddle portion, food for 2 lunches, 1 breakfast and 1 dinner. Other food as needed for the weekend. Water and/or purification system. Changes of clothes, sleeping bag, tent (it may be wise to double up, but this is up to you). Dry bags/Toiletries! Teva/Water shoes. Hiking boots/gear. As the date nears, we will coordinate some of the common group items.
IMPORTANT: I've been in contact with the outfitter and there will be no issue regarding availibility for this trip. I will book it this week. If you wish to join me, you will be required to mail me a check for $42 minimum (add $10/day for Friday and Sunday camping, if you aren't making other arrangements) to secure your place (address will be sent when you've signed-up and check must be received in 7 days). The fees are NON-REFUNDABLE unless the outfitter cannot accommodate us for whatever reason. A substitute may take your place...this will be your responsibility!
Directions
Saturday morning we'll meet in Errol (for those not camping the night before) at Northern Waters just over the Androscoggin River heading east along Rt. 28 (just beyond the Rt. 28/16 intersection on the north side of the road).
