Mts Whiteface and Ester

Hiking the Northern Most High Peaks

Details
Join me for this 12.8-mile hike to Mt. Whiteface (4865') and Mt. Ester (4239'). These are the northern most High Peaks in the Adirondacks, are separated from the others by at least 12 miles and are geologically different. This hike uses the Wilmington Trail, which begins near the reservoir dam. The route up to Whiteface crosses below the summit of Marble Mountain and crosses old ski trails along the way. The summit of Whiteface offers panoramic views of the surrounding McKenzie Mountain Wilderness, views of Lake Placid, the High Peaks to the south and even into Canada. There is also a weather station on its summit. On the return we'll detour over to Mt. Ester, which is reached by an unmaintained trail. Lookout Mtn is traversed on the way to its summit. On top of Ester is a replica plaque dedicated to Ester McComb, the only peak named for a woman (the original plaque now resides in the Adirondack Museum).
Elevation gain from the parking area is 3620 feet. This hike will be approximately 9 hours depending on breaks and time for lunch.
What to bring: Typical spring hiking gear should be appropriate: convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks and at least a windbreaker (and possibly fleece), as the summits/ridges may still be chilly and windy even on a nice day. Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Optionally, pack bug repellent and sunscreen and anything else you may require for a day hike.
Depending on interest we'll have dinner and drinks in Wilmington or Keene after the hike. NOTE: If there is any interest in camping either nights, contact me and I'll be happy to coordinate.
Directions
The trailhead parking is approximately 0.6 miles up the Whiteface Memorial Highway (Rt. 431) from Route 86 in Wilmington. There will be a small DEC sign.
