Mt. Osceola Winter Preview (New Date)

Catch this popular and accessible 4000-footer before the full onset of winter!

Details

Second attempt - hopefully we'll catch the pre-winter weather right this time! After some GO holiday cheer the day before, come apply some of that stored energy to a great Sunday on Mt. Osceola!

We will approach from the mountain's southern trailhead on Tripoli Road. The trail has moderate grades and fairly good footing all the way to the summit. Once at the summit, we will encounter a wintery scene, and will be rewarded with fantastic late fall views to the north and south. The hike is 6.4 miles round t trip, and involves 2,100 feet of elevation gain. It will take approximately 5 hours to complete. Be prepared with micro spikes and crampons for the ice and snow we are sure to encounter as we approach the summit. Unless I alert you to the contrary, we're still ahead of snowshoe season. For complete gear recommendations, click the "Gear List" link at the bottom of this page and check out the 'winter day hike' list. Don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.

We will have the option of going for Oscola's East Peak (also a 4,000- footer) if we're OK on time and everyone in the group is up for it. This would add another two miles, 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and an additional 1.5-2 hours.

Depending on the group's desires, we'll convene afterwards at a local eatery to cap the day.

Directions

The Mt. Osceola Trail trailhead we'll be starting from is on Tripoli Road (I-93 Exit 31). Head east on Tripoli Road for 7 miles, and you'll see the trailhead on your left, almost at Thornton Gap (the mountain pass that Tripoli Road climbs over). If you crest Thornton Gap, you've gone a little too far. This is aproximately 1hr 20 mins from Concord, NH; 2 hrs 20 mins from Boston.
