Mt. Ascutney Hike

Mt. Ascutney Out-And-Back Hike via the Weathersfield Trail.

Details

Mt. Ascutney is located in the south-eastern section of Windsor County, in the Connecticut River Valley. The Weathersfield Trail is the one trail on the south face of the mountain. Highlights of this trail include Cascade Falls, the largest waterfall on the mountain, and the mountain's one launch platform for hang gliders. This hike offers many breathtaking views. There is also a great observation platform on the summit for hikers. On a clear day, there is full visibility of the Connecticut River, as well as many of the surrounding towns and bodies of water. We will enjoy lunch at the summit and we may go out to dinner afterwards, if there is interest. This hike is approximately 5.8 miles (round trip) with a 2,050 feet elevation gain, this is a pleasant, scenic hike! There are some moderately steep stretches. What to Bring: Typical fall hiking gear should be appropriate: shorts or convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks and a windbreaker/rain gear (just in case). Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water (2-l minimum is recommended). Optionally, pack bug repellent and sunscreen and anything else you may require for a day hike. Afterwards: We should be completed with the hike by 4-5 PM. If there is sufficient interest, we'll cap the day off with dinner/drinks in the area afterwards. Trail head is about 2 hours driving from Burlington, Vt. and about 2 1/4 hours from Boston, Ma. We will be meeting at the trail head parking area, which is located off Route 131 in Weathersfield, Vt...Cascade Falls Rd veers off of Vermont Route 131 in Weathersfield. Take this to the end. We will meet at the trail head at 10 AM. We should be done between 4 and 5 PM.
