Snake Mountain and Red Rock Pond Hike

Snake Mountain and Red Rock Pond Hike

A Moderate, Picturesque Hike for Columbus Day

Details

This is a 4.5-5 mile loop hike which climbs up to Snake Mountain (1287') where there are great views of the Champlain Valley. The descent is via a different route that goes by the lovely Red Rock Pond. A short side trail leads to a cranberry bog. This 9,500 year-old cranberry bog is a one-acre bog mat complete with unique plants, such as pitcher plants. Elevation gain is only 980'.

Trailhead:
From Middlebury, follow Rt. 23 northwest to reach Rt. 17 at a T-stop. Turn left onto Rt. 17 and travel for about 2 miles. Turn left onto Mountain Road (if you reach Rt. 22A, you've gone about 0.8 mile too far). Follow Mountain Road for 2.5 miles and then turn right into the obvious parking lot (if you see Willmarth Road on the right, you have gone 0.1 mile too far).

What to Bring: Typical fall hiking gear should be appropriate: shorts or convertible hiking pants, good sturdy hiking boots with thick socks and a windbreaker/raingear (just in case). Also bring along lunch, snacks and plenty of water. Optionally, pack bug repellent and sunscreen and anything else that you may require.

Afterwards: We should be completed with the hike by 2PM. If there is sufficient interest, we'll cap the day off with dinner/drinks in the area afterwards.

NOTE: Contact me, if you're interested in camping on Friday/Saturday/Sunday, as I will be staying at Branbury State Park (http://www.vtstateparks.com/index.cfm). I will be happy to try and coordinate. This may be handy if you're also planning on doing Moosalamoo and Bread Loaf/Wilson hikes with me over the Columbus Day Weekend.
